SACRAMENTS
The Church Teaches us that:
“The Eucharist is the source and the summit of the Christian life. For in the blessed Eucharist is contained the whole spiritual good of the Church, namely Christ himself. The Eucharist is also the culmination both of God’s action, sanctifying the world in Christ and, of the worship men offer to Christ. In brief, the Eucharist is the sum and summary of our faith” (CCC1324-5). And: ” Because Christ himself is present in the sacrament of the altar, he is to be honoured with the worship of adoration. “To visit the Blessed Sacrament is a proof of gratitude, an expression of love, and a duty of adoration toward Christ our Lord” (CCC14-18).
The first sacrament, for all Christians, is Baptism whereby we become a member of the Church and receive the Holy Spirit to help us live as a true disciple of Christ. The other six sacraments (Reconciliation, Eucharist, Confirmation, Marriage, Holy Orders and Anointing of the Sick) are further moments of grace that deepen our Baptismal commitment.
BAPTISM
Parents who wish to have their child baptised should speak with a priest according to where they live. The priest will explain the process and guide them through the preparation. Families who attend Mass at St Swithun or St Thomas More are asked to meet Fr Wojciech, introduce themselves, and request Baptism for their child. Baptism is the beginning of a Christian life and welcomes the child into the Caholic Church.
RECONCILIATION (CONFESSION)
Reconciliation is the sacrament of God’s mercy and forgiveness. Catholics are encouraged to celebrate this sacrament regularly as a way of healing and renewing their relationship with God. Children and adults are prepared through catechesis before receiving the sacrament for the first time. Please speak with Fr. Wojciech or parish office for registering your interest.
FIRST HOLY COMMUNION
First Holy Communion is one of the most sacred moments in a Catholic’s life. It is when a person first receives the Eucharist, the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ. Children prepare through a parish programme to understand the meaning of the sacrament. Holy Communion may be received once the Church’s requirements and preparation have been completed.
CONFIRMATION
Confirmation is the sacrament in which Catholics receive a special outpouring of the Holy Spirit. It strengthens them to live their faith with confidence and to witness to Christ in daily life. Candidates take part in a period of formation and prayerful preparation. Please contact the parish office or speak with the priest after Mass if you wish to be Confirmed.
MARRIAGE
Couples wishing to marry in a Catholic church should contact the priest at least six months in advance (a year is recommended). Marriage requires completion of Church paperwork, supporting documents, and a marriage preparation course. Civil notice must also be given through the Registry Office within the required timeframe. An initial meeting with the priest will guide couples through both Church and civil requirements.
HOLY ORDERS
Holy Orders is the sacrament through which men are ordained as deacons, priests, or bishops to serve the Church. It is a vocation of prayer, service, and leadership in the faith community. Those considering this calling undertake a period of discernment and formation with the guidance of the Church. Anyone who feels called to this vocation is encouraged to speak with a priest.
ANOINTING OF THE SICK
The Anointing of the Sick brings spiritual comfort, peace, and strength to those who are seriously ill, elderly, or preparing for surgery. Through prayer and anointing with holy oil, the Church asks God’s healing and grace for the person receiving it. This sacrament may be received more than once when health conditions change. Please contact the priest or parish office to arrange a visit.
